His diary, which half-diverted, half-shocked our ancestors on its appearance as the eighteenth century was drawing to its close, is probably but little read. Yet it interested Browning; though the poet, after belabouring Dodington with Darwinian and other arguments calculated to perplex a Georgian politician not a little, dismissed him with: - This judgment must be pronounced to err on the side of severity. Dodington may have been a knave, but he was no fool. All the leading men of the time, from the mighty Pitt downwards, had recourse, on the contrary, to his advice and influence.
