Among the many Armenian diasporas, the Carpathian one remains largely unknown. For different reasons, Romanian, Ukrainian and Polish Armenians had begun to integrate themselves into those countries, but since the fall of "People's democracies" there has been a wave of claim for "Armenianness". Simultaneously there has been an increasing interest for Armenian studies in the academic and artistic communities of these countries. It is high time someone looked deeper into this page of history: when and why did Armenian communities settle in the Carpathians, what route did they take, what contacts did they have with other ethnic groups, what did they bring to native cultures? They were two key objectives to pursue: scientific rigour and compelling presentation. To this end, so as to fulfill the first one, nothing is expressed without explicit references of sources and additional bibliographical contents, if needed. For the second one, the book contains abundant high-quality illustrations: instead of showing primary sources in the text (inscriptions, manuscripts or printed pages), originals have been reproduced, as far as possible - and sometimes masterpieces of calligraphy, with translation and comments. As far as buildings are concerned, it is interesting to compare current pictures with older views of engravings. Paintings, portraits, miniatures, decoratives arts, historical maps or even coins add a touch of authenticity and allow to give additional contents that are useful to the reader. Claude Mutafian is a Professor of Mathematics which he taught several years in France and abroad. Holding a PhD in history, he is also a specialist of the relations between the Armenians with their neighbors in the Middle Ages and the Modern period. He has written several books on this subject.
