The main focus of this proceedings volume is on the outstanding contribution made by the mathematical sciences and botany to the genesis and development of early modern garden art and garden culture. With their many facets, the mathematical sciences and botany point to the increasingly "scientific" approach that was being adopted in garden art and garden culture in the Early Modern period. This development unfolds in interaction with philosophical, religious, political and social processes and positions. The volume strikingly shows, that such processes are able to make use of the knowledge of nature manifested in gardens for various purposes.§§The conference giving rise to this volume was jointly organised by the Centre of Garden Art and Landscape Architecture (CGL) of the Leibniz Universität Hannover and the Interdisciplinary Centre for Science and Technology Studies (IZWT) of the Bergische Universität Wuppertal.§§
